How to Best Prepare for Your Engagement Session

Engagement sessions are such a special way to celebrate this exciting season of life. They not only give you beautiful photos to use for save-the-dates, wedding websites, and wall art, but they also help you get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. Here are a few tips to help you feel prepared and confident going into your session.

  1. Choose the Right Outfits

Your outfits set the tone for your session, so pick clothing that feels like you while also being polished and timeless. Coordinating without being overly matchy creates a cohesive look that photographs beautifully. Neutral tones, soft colors, and subtle patterns often work best. Think about how your outfit choices complement your location as well. If you’re not sure where to start, I’ve put together a few outfit ideas here: Engagement Session Wardrobe.

  1. Pick a Location That Tells Your Story

Whether it’s the park where you had your first date, a downtown spot you love exploring together, or a scenic overlook with gorgeous views, your location should feel meaningful. Don’t be afraid to choose somewhere unique that reflects your personalities and relationship. If you are having a difficult time choosing a location, do not worry! I have many locations I can suggest.

  1. Plan for Comfort and Confidence

The best photos happen when you feel comfortable and confident. Choose shoes you can walk in easily, and bring along layers or accessories if the weather might change. For brides-to-be, hair and makeup trials can be a great excuse to get camera-ready.

  1. Timing is Everything

Lighting plays a huge role in your photos. I always recommend scheduling sessions during “golden hour” — the hour after sunrise or before sunset — when the light is soft and flattering.

  1. Relax and Have Fun

Most importantly, remember that your engagement session is about celebrating your love story. Don’t worry about being “perfect” in front of the camera — just focus on each other. Laugh, move, and interact naturally, and I’ll capture the magic as it happens.
